Insert Repairs in Istanbul's Ports

A 180-meter chemical tanker docked in the Port of Istanbul required an insert installation on a damaged section of its bottom plating. Our team of diver technicians mobilized quickly to perform on-site repairs, eliminating the need for the vessel to enter a dry dock.

The damaged area was located beneath a sounding pipe in one of the ballast tanks. Although a temporary repair had previously been performed, a permanent solution was necessary to ensure the vessel’s integrity and compliance with international regulations.

After conducting a thorough inspection, our divers installed a cofferdam on the waterside of the affected plating. This allowed them to create a dry workspace around the damaged area. The team then removed a circular section of the damaged plating, approximately 250 mm in diameter, as agreed upon with the classification society and the shipowner.

The edges of the opening were meticulously prepared for the new insert. Using our certified procedures, the insert plate was welded into place with a full-penetration weld, ensuring structural integrity. An independent inspector carried out ultrasonic testing, and the attending classification surveyor approved the repair. The cofferdam was safely removed, and the vessel was cleared to continue its operations.

Engine Room Repair on an Oil Tanker

In another operation at the Tuzla Shipyard, a 150-meter oil tanker required an insert repair in its engine room. The vessel had sustained damage to its shell plating due to corrosion, necessitating immediate attention.

Our team swiftly installed a cofferdam to secure the exterior of the hull. Inside the engine room, we removed the compromised section measuring 300 mm by 300 mm. The new insert was expertly welded into place, following all class-approved procedures. The repair was completed efficiently, preventing delays in the tanker’s schedule.
