In-Service Main Engine Block Repair Completed by Weser Maritim During Active Voyage

During routine condition monitoring, the vessel’s engineering team identified structural cracking and excessive wear around critical areas of the main engine block. The affected zones included:

• Threaded fixing holes around the crosshead guide base

• Areas adjacent to the camshaft housing

• Localized damage near cylinder No. 1 seating

Such damage poses a serious risk to engine alignment and long-term structural integrity if not addressed promptly—especially on medium-speed marine diesel engines operating under continuous load.

Weser Maritim’s engineering team mobilized onboard and carried out the repair using a certified cold repair technique. This method is particularly suited for in-service vessels, as it avoids heat input and the associated risks of thermal distortion.

The repair process included:

• Removal of damaged and fatigued material

• Installation of mechanically locked metallic keys and inserts

• Precision machining of the repaired area

• Re-drilling and re-threading to the original M16 specifications

By performing all work in situ, the engine remained assembled, aligned, and available for controlled operation throughout the repair window.

Cold repair techniques are essential for marine engines that cannot be taken out of service. Unlike welding or thermal methods, cold repairs:

• Eliminate the risk of heat-induced cracking or distortion
